Pre Summit Masterclasses – UK Lean Summit 2023

We have structured our 2023 Masterclasses slightly differently. We have broken the sessions down into bitesize half days. As a result this gives you the flexibility to attend a morning / afternoon or a morning & afternoon masterclass! Choose from 1 of 4 morning sessions and/or 4 afternoon sessions. If you attend both a morning and afternoon session, you will save over £20 (see instructions below).

Each theme is based around our Lean Transformation Framework (LTF). Learn more about the LTF on our website here. Places on each masterclass are limited to ensure you get the most out of the day. This means you will have time one on one with the presenter. Book early to avoid disappointment!

How to Develop Effective Problem Solvers (Morning Session)

Purpose – Why Take this Masterclass?

Problem Solving is arguably the number 1 Lean skill to develop! Indeed, the first question in the Lean Transformation Framework (LTF) is “What problem are we trying to solve?

However, the problem solving approach you take depends upon  your level in the organisation and the type and size of problem you are trying to solve. Not everything requires an A3 or a deep statistical analysis!

This Masterclass will give you a better understanding of the 4 Types of Problems and the methods to use, focussing on our 4 Step Rapid Problem Solving (RPS) approach.

RPS is great for those Gap from Standard (Type 2) and Target Condition (Type 3) problems that occur in your daily/weekly performance management system reviews. Offering a structured approach to get to root cause and prevent reoccurrence.

Process – What will you Learn About?

During this interactive session you will learn about the 4 Step RPS method and where it fits in to the Problem Solving Framework by:-

  • Reviewing our RPS Visual Teach Poster, Facilitation Guide & Delegate Workbook (Learning Materials provided to keep & use).
  • Completing an RPS Case Study to confirm your Understanding.
  • Practise summarising the problem on an RPS Quadrant Chart for simple, quick and effective communication.
  • Understanding what a good RPS Quadrant Chart should look like.
  • Having a method to evaluate your own and other members RPS’s to ensure they have robustly followed the process and thinking way to solve the problem.

People – Who can take this Masterclass?

As our approach to Lean is always situational this Masterclass is for anyone from Team Leaders, Managers & Snr Managers who want to develop their problem solving or other members capabilities. The Number 1 Lean skill remember!

5 Star Business Fundamentals (Morning Session)

How business leaders increase team performance and consistently deliver on time, without the firefighting, daily drama and performance losses.

Purpose – Why Take this Masterclass?

Business fundamentals is the day-to-day activity that an organisation and its teams perform to deliver customer value (on-time and with the right quality). Meeting the plan and achieving our business goals is paramount, but this is where most teams and managers struggle.

While embarking on an improvement journey, many rush in and get ahead of themselves running kaizen events, cost saving projects, mapping processes, driving tech initiatives and kaizen events, but still struggle to improve or sustain performance.

We know that business fundamentals are also key to our strategic plans and our improvement initiatives.  But regularly we see leaders in multi-site roles struggle to drive improvement through their teams often resorting to top-down style initiatives. And along with the businesses improvement teams they share a common struggle in getting buy-in and traction for their initiatives.

Why is this, well many trip themselves up and get ahead of themselves rushing into the improvement phase and not realising that they have skipped a very important step, well actually 3 of them and this is where most major challenges lie for them and that they are in fact not ready for improvement.

One organisation, a real pioneer in the improvement space even admitted this mistake at an industry week best plants conference, when they said that they had spent years running random kaizen improvement activities, with little to no real business or customer impact.

It’s no wonder that organisations struggle to get buy-in and traction for strategic initiatives and improvement activities, when their colleagues struggle to get the work done and consistently deliver on-time. Every improvement journey and successful team requires a foundation for improvement, enabling them to consistently meet customer expectations and exceed our goals.

Unfortunately, the majority of teams, and organisations struggle here as:

  • Managers and their teams don’t have enough time to get the work done, let alone make things better and work on improvement
  • Teams get confused, applying the wrong improvement techniques at the wrong time, resulting in little or no increase in business performance.
  • Senior leaders and improvement teams struggle to get buy-in and traction on strategic initiatives and improvement events
  • Firefighting, and recurring problems consume increasingly greater amounts of time and energy
  • Teams end up living with subpar processes (building additional cost and inefficiencies into the business and letting customers down)

Process – What will you Learn About?

  • Learn to create more time to get the right things done
  • Understand team performance, being clear on what’s impacting performance and if their improvement actions are making a difference
  • Learn how to build lean and continuous improvement thinking into the daily work of teams and front-line management
  • Learn how highly effective management systems help us drive continuous improvement through the business
  • Have a clear path to turn every team into a high performing team, with little to no drama and addressing those performance losses
  • Understand if each business unit and each team are working on the right things and weather or not they need help

Topics that will be examined include:

  • Standardised work
  • Problem solving
  • Visual management
  • Management routines
  • Daily lean management
  • Management Systems

People – Who can take this Masterclass?

Business leaders, managers and front-line supervision wanting to:

  • Establish a foundation for improvement
  • Start or accelerate their improvement journey and increase performance
  • Help their teams win and become successful
  • Drive improvement through the business
  • Eliminate problems and firefighting

Total Kaizen Culture (Afternoon Session)

How kaizen can help us beat our productivity, lead-time and cost challenges

Purpose – Why Take this Masterclass?

Many years ago, I was taught that if we are not practising kaizen on a regular basis then our costs will be too high, our lead-times time too long and our customer satisfaction will be too low, and we will lose out to the competition.  As the bull whip effect of uncertainty impacts business and communities throughout the world, we face epic challenges on several fronts. Disruption from new technology, disruption in our supply chains, with our labour and in our costs (product, processing and overheads costs).

Deciding to do nothing may result in more than a hit on margins and focusing on cutting internal costs could well result in reduced customer satisfaction, as we’ve seen many times when organisation remove organisational layers without getting into the detail of how the work really works.  Instead, we owe it to all employees and customers to apply Kaizen or continuous improvement everyday and everywhere, creating increased capacity, producing greater value and reducing our lead-time and costs.

Process – What will you Learn About?

  • How organisations and their teams can reduce cost and lead-time
  • About 3 different kaizen strategies to leverage speed and intensity and when to apply each
  • About applying kaizen @ multiple levels in an organisation, improving the work of individuals, teams and the organisation as a whole
  • The most common pitfalls of applying kaizen and how to avoid them
  • How to select the process or area for Kaizen
  • To work through the 8 step kaizen process to help you plan and run a rapid improvement event and what you need to do to sustain the gains
  • We’ll also look at how you can connect your kaizen plan with your business unit financials

Topics that will be examined include:

  • Value, Waste and Flow
  • Standardised Work
  • Process mapping
  • Roles and Responsibilities
  • Visual Management

People – Who can take this Masterclass?

Leaders, managers and frontline supervision looking to:

  • Learn to see the opportunity that lies within our business
  • Learn how they can support their organisations improvement journey
  • Improve customer response time and shorten lead times
  • Accelerate their organisation competitive edge
  • Increase capacity for new products and services
  • Reduce product, processing, and overhead costs

Note: this session builds on the morning 5 Star Business Fundamentals session it is highly recommended that you join both sessions.
