4th LEAN HEALTHCARE FORUM - October 2007

lean Healthcare Forum The well-received fourth Lean Healthcare Forum responded to a need among lean healthcare practitioners for a day of peer-group discussion about progress and issues, in some cases the discussion was initiated by the A3 poster summaries of their projects which some delegates had brought along.

After a practical, but inspirational, talk on how to get started and move forward by the CEO of the Gwent NHS Trust, delegates viewed a very thought-provoking video talk by John Shook on what Toyota can teach us about lean leadership. The subsequent discussion workshops were at three levels. The first showed how to create basic stability and safety using standard work methods, with memorable examples of the consequences of lack of stability from Portsmouth and Gwent hospitals. The second session was all about how to make flow happen with the Portsmouth team being quizzed about how they were reducing the time from GP referral to non-invasive diagnostics from 31 weeks to 5 weeks. The final session discussed how to plan, manage and audit a lean transformation across a hospital.
