Lean Enterprise Academy > Healthcare > Making Savings without Compromising Patient Safety through Stock Control
The cost of Stock/materials in an Emergency Department, MAU, ward, laboratory or any department can be hugely excessive – too much stock ‘Just in Case’ often passing it’s expiry date on the shelf making working areas feel cramped and cluttered.
Worst still we can go from ‘feast to famine’ whereby units run out of vital goods – compromising patient safety (we once witnessed the death of a patient because staff could not find the appropriate Stent) and leading to the practice of borrowing from other units, that will in turn run out prematurely.
Participants on this 1 day workshop will be trained in ‘Just in Time’ stock replenishment involving the scientific calculation of Minimum/Maximum stock levels and Re-order points for every item along with the appropriate replenishment frequencies.
Through instruction, small group discussions and exercises, the workshop will show the participants how to: -
Visually control stock on wards, in laboratories and in departments that combined with regular, appropriate, replenishment frequencies represent savings in the region of £1,000 per ward, laboratory or department per month as well as freeing up valuable time and space without ever compromising patient safety.
You will benefit most from this workshop if you are a Department/Ward/Service Improvement Manager/Staff Member who wants to move your area to become a safer, more effective and efficient provider of patient care.
