Lean Enterprise Academy > Healthcare > Training : Making Services Flow in Line with Patient Demand
Service Level Agreements (SLAs) are now commonplace in healthcare. For example the path lab may have a SLA to turnaround blood results to A&E within 90 minutes but is this good enough?
If patients (who require admission) are arriving on average, at the A&E Majors door every 10 minutes - but cannot be admitted until the results are available - we have to ask “is a SLA of 90 minutes good enough?”
How many bays will be occupied by patients, every hour, waiting blood results. Do the maths.
On the wards it is common for patients LoS to be extended due to the delivery performance of support services – Pathology, Radiology etc. It is quite normal, for example, for the Turnaround Time for an inpatient TTOs/TTHs (from writing a Scrip to delivery to the ward) to take many hours.
Participants on this 1 day workshop will be shown how to, through the application of a 4 step approach and by asking 11 questions of the process:
Through instruction, small group discussions and exercises, the workshop will show the participants how to:-
Truly understand patient demand, thereby enabling them to re-design their services and staffing levels to meet this demand.
Example: By truly understanding demand for TTOs and re-designing the working practices in the Lab it is possible to reduce the time from writing a Scrip to delivery to the ward from an average of 340 minutes to less than 30 minutes, whilst producing TTOs/TTHs requested on the scrip every six minutes, the rate at which the patients need them.
This approach can be adopted by all front line and support services.
You will benefit most from this workshop if you are a manager, physician, nurse, allied health or service improvement who wants to move your services to become a safer, more effective and efficient provider of patient care.
