The Lean Enterprise Academy (LEA) is a non-profit Academy established to develop knowledge of Lean Thinking and its implementation and to disseminate this knowledge through publications and workshops. Founded by Professor Daniel Jones, LEA is the UK associate of the Lean Enterprise Institute in the USA, founded by Dr. James P. Womack. LEA is run from offices in Goodrich, Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire.
Professor Daniel Jones and Dr. James P. Womack are the authors of the influential, best-selling management books Machine that changed the World and Lean Thinking. They invented the word Lean as a means to describe the approaches that they studied at Lean Exemplar Organisations.
Senior LEA fellows Marc Baker and Ian Taylor have recently published, the result of their five years experience of working within the UK healthcare industry, in a book entitled Making Hospitals Work.
LEA seeks to develop and teach the core skills of Lean Thinking to those leading lean transformations and to those who teach these skills to others. In other words, it passes this knowledge on and trains the trainers.

LEA’s approach (when working with large healthcare organisations) is based on the Supplier Association approaches employed by Lean Exemplars in other Sectors . This is how these Exemplars transfer knowledge and capability in Lean Thinking to its Supplier organisations.
The approach requires resources from both parties and is based on a Value stream by value stream implementation by the staff, demonstrating competence in (re)design, operation and improvement processes.
